RESUMO

It may be possible to enhance adults' cognitive health and promote healthy aging through processing speed training using the Useful Field of View (UFOV) related activities and software. This study investigated the impact of utilizing UFOV on processing speed improvement in older adults in response to the growing global attention on cognitive health and aging issues. In this quasi-experimental study, 22 individuals (mean age ± SD = 71.9 ± 4.8) participated in the experimental group, and 20 community-based participants (mean age ± SD = 67.1 ± 4.8) were in the control group. The intervention involved ten sessions of UFOV training, each lasting 60 min, conducted twice a week for the experimental group while the control group engaged in volunteer service activities. Measurements of Counting Back, Fabrica, Double-Decision, and Hawkeye were administered to all participants before and after the intervention. The results showed significant improvements in the experimental group for the four measurements (p ≤ 0.01, 0.05, 0.001, 0.001) and non-significant gains in the control group (p ≥ 0.05) for all. Furthermore, mixed repeated-measures ANOVA analysis, with time 1 pre-test measures as the covariate, revealed significant interaction effects between time and group for all measurement indicators (p = 0.05, 0.01, 0.05) except for Fabrica (p > 0.05). In conclusion, these findings support the effectiveness of UFOV cognitive training interventions in enhancing specific cognitive abilities.

RESUMO

Theory of mind (ToM) deficits in people with schizophrenia have been reported and associated with impaired social interactions. Thus, ToM deficits may negatively impact social functioning and warrant consideration in treatment development. However, extant ToM measures may place excessive cognitive demands on people with schizophrenia. Therefore, the study aimed to develop a comprehensible Assessment of ToM for people with Schizophrenia (AToMS) and evaluate its psychometric properties. The AToMs was developed in 5 stages, including item formation, expert review, content validity evaluation, animation production, and cognitive interviews of 25 people with schizophrenia. The psychometric properties of the 16-item AToMS (including reliability and validity) were then tested on 59 people with schizophrenia. The newly developed animated AToMS assesses 8 ToM concepts in the cognitive and affective dimensions while placing minimal neurocognitive demands on people with schizophrenia. The AToMS presented satisfactory psychometric properties, with adequate content validity (content validity index = 0.91); mostly moderate item difficulty (item difficulty index = 0.339-0.966); good discrimination (coefficients = 0.379-0.786), internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.850), and reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.901 for test-retest, 0.997 for inter-rater); and satisfactory convergent and divergent validity. The AToMS is reliable and valid for evaluating ToM characteristics in people with schizophrenia. Future studies are warranted to examine the AToMS in other populations (e.g., people with affective disorders) to cross-validate and extend its utility and psychometric evidence.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the characteristics and diameters of residual anastomoses and the occurrence of twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS) in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) patients with placental vascular injection after fetoscopic laser surgery (FLS). METHODS: A total of 90 cases of pregnant women who underwent FLS owing to TTTS were collected in the university hospital from May 2018 to December 2020. Therein, 40 cases received placental injection and were divided into the TAPS group and non-TAPS group according to the postoperative complications. The number of residual superficial anastomoses was counted and the diameter was measured. RESULTS: Among the placentae of nine patients in the TAPS group, two cases had no superficial anastomoses, and seven cases had 16 superficial anastomoses, including eight arterio-venous (AV) anastomoses, two veno-arterial (VA) anastomoses, three arterio-arterial (AA) anastomoses and three veno-venous (VV) anastomoses. Among the placentae of 31 patients in the non-TAPS group, 19 cases had no superficial anastomoses, and 12 cases had 18 superficial anastomoses, including two AV anastomoses, five VA anastomoses, seven AA anastomoses, and four VV anastomoses; and both the two cases of AV anastomoses were accompanied by AA anastomoses. The number of AV anastomoses in the placentae of the TAPS group was significantly elevated compared with that in the non-TAPS group (p<0.05). While there was no significant difference in the numbers of placentae with superficial anastomoses, the numbers of blood vessels with VA anastomoses, VV anastomoses, and AA anastomoses between the two groups (p>0.05). Through analyzing the diameters of 34 superficial anastomoses in the two groups, it was shown that the diameters of AA anastomoses in the non-TAPS group were significantly larger than those in the TAPS group (Z=1.97, p<0.05). There was no statistical difference in the diameters of AV anastomoses (Z=0.52, p>0.05), VA anastomoses (Z=0.98, p>0.05), and VV anastomoses (Z=0.36, p>0.05). The differences of the birth weight and inter-twin hemoglobin difference were statistically significant (p<0.05). The result indicated that the differences between age, gestational weeks at operation, delivery, and mean operating times were not statistically significant (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The increase in the number of AV anastomoses could obviously elevate the incidence of TAPS. The probability of TAPS occurrence is reduced following the increased diameters of AA anastomoses, demonstrating that AA anastomosis has a protective effect on TTTS patients.

RESUMO

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets have been demonstrated to be promising templates for the growth of various kinds of nanomaterials on their surfaces to construct novel 2D composites, thus realizing enhanced performance in various applications. Herein, we report the growth of Cu2O nanoparticles on 2D Zr-ferrocene (Zr-Fc)-MOF (Zr-Fc-MOF) nanosheets to prepare 2D composites for near-infrared (NIR) photothermally enhanced chemodynamic antibacterial therapy. The uniform Zr-Fc-MOF nanosheets are synthesized using the solvothermal method, followed by ultrasound sonication, and Cu2O nanoparticles are then deposited on its surface to obtain the Cu2O-decorated Zr-Fc-MOF (denoted as Cu2O/Zr-Fc-MOF) 2D composite. Promisingly, the Cu2O/Zr-Fc-MOF composite shows higher chemodynamic activity for producing ·OH via Fenton-like reaction than that of the pristine Zr-Fc-MOF nanosheets. More importantly, the chemodynamic activity of the Cu2O/Zr-Fc-MOF composite can be further enhanced by the photothermal effect though NIR laser (808 nm) irradiation. Thus, the Cu2O/Zr-Fc-MOF composite can be used as an efficient nanoagent for photothermally enhanced chemodynamic antibacterial therapy.

RESUMO

Adults with schizophrenia usually have impairments in theory of mind (ToM), which subsequently cause them problems in social interaction. Therefore, it is important for healthcare providers to assess their ToM using adequate measures. This systematic review evaluated current ToM measures (or ToM tasks) for adults with schizophrenia and summarized their specific characteristics, including the concept and construct, administration, and psychometric properties. From a review of 117 articles, 13 types of ToM tasks were identified, and the findings from these articles were qualitatively synthesized. The results showed that ToM tasks are diverse in their presentation modalities, answer modes, strategies of controlling cognitive confounders, and scoring. Most tasks employ cognitive and affective dimensions and target a specific, single ToM concept. The present systematic review found that psychometric evidence supporting the ToM tasks, such as internal consistency, test-retest reliability, unidimensionality, and convergent, criterion, and ecological validities, is insufficient. Based on the results, we propose several principles for selecting appropriate ToM tasks in practice, e.g., selecting a task with multiple ToM concepts, or an exclusive ToM construct containing the cognitive and affective dimensions. Moreover, future studies are needed to provide more psychometric evidence on each type of ToM task applied in people with schizophrenia.

RESUMO

To investigate factors associated with quality of life (QoL) and disaster-related psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive episode (MDE), in the survivors of a gas explosion in Taiwan 5 years after the event. A community-based cross-sectional study of residents from an area that experienced a gas explosion was conducted 5 years after the event. The Short Form 12v2 (SF-12v2) was used to screen 2511 participants. The Disaster-Related Psychological Screening Test (DRPST) was used to assess probable MDE and PTSD. A total of 2511 participants, including 604 males and 1907 females, completed the QoL survey. The average age was 56.02 ± 16.78 years, and most participants were in the ≧65 age group (39.7%). The males had better QoL in the physical dimensions. Lifestyle was significantly positively associated with QoL. A total of 894 participants completed the DRPST, which showed some individuals with probable MDE (n = 93, 10.4%), probable PTSD (n = 22, 2.5%), or probable MDE and PTSD (n = 49, 5.5%); most people had no MDE or PTSD (n = 730, 81.7%). Those in the probable PTSD or MDE groups were significantly more likely to be female or to be experiencing stressors (p < 0.001). The participants continued to be affected by the disaster based on their QoL, even 5 years later. Females had a higher risk of probable psychiatric disorders and poorer QoL in the physical dimensions. Long-term follow-up, interventions and investigations after a disaster are needed.

RESUMO

SYNOPSIS: The establishment of a multidisciplinary consultation system is necessary for the diagnosis of complicated fetal anomalies. PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the incidences of different types of fetal anomalies and the influence of multidisciplinary consultation on fetal prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Multidisciplinary specialists include obstetricians, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, and experts of ultrasound department and genetic counseling. Consultation was done if the fetal ultrasound examinations showed abnormality. Follow-up, assistance, and guidance for the fetus were achieved by phone calls. RESULTS: Ultrasound screening showed that the incidences of central nervous system anomaly and genitourinary anomaly were 25.80% (275/1,066) and 22.05% (235/1,066), respectively. The detection rates of fetal anomalies were 5.07% (54/1,066), 36.12% (385/1,066), and 58.82% (627/1,066) in pregnant women with gestational age of <20, 20-28, and >28 weeks, respectively. In addition, the fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly accounted for 40.73% of central nervous system malformation, while 71.43% cases with fetal cerebral ventriculomegaly were alleviated during the follow-up period. The proportion of hydronephrosis in genitourinary anomalies was 50.64%, and the remission rate of hydronephrosis was 67.23% during the follow-up period. CONCLUSION: The establishment of a multidisciplinary consultation system is necessary for the diagnosis of complicated fetal anomalies. The central nervous system anomaly and genitourinary anomaly are the most common fetal anomalies. In addition, the remission rates of cerebral ventriculomegaly and fetal hydronephrosis are high during the follow-up period.
